Olmos was born to Eleanor, a welder and Pedro Olmos. Olmos grew up wanting to be a professional football player. During his teen his interest shifted from football to music. He even performed with some garbage bands and at various clubs in the late 60’s and early 70’s. But a friend suggested that he should consider a career in acting. Olmos also took acting lessons, while he was at California State University, Los Angeles.
His first break in theatre came with Luis Valdez’s play, “Zoot Suit”, in 1978, for which Olmos received a Tony nomination and great critical acclaim. Television and films then came easy to him. He has worked in television series like Miami Vice. Movies like “Stand and Deliver”, “my family” and “Selena” all go to his credit. He has played captain Adama in the famous Battlestar Galactica, but he agreed to work in this remake only on the condition that the stories reflect as much realism and credibility as possible.
This actor is more active as an activist. He lays lot of importance to education and believes in spreading positive vibes all around. He believes that we all have a choice in where life takes us. He is even been a member of UNICEF.
Olmos has been married thrice. He first married Kaija keel in 1971, and has two children with her. After his divorce in 1992, he then got married to actress Lorraine Bracco in 1994 and got divorced in 2002. Currently he is married to Lymari Nadal and has adopted three children with her.
